+ THE FITNESS SHOT. Q&A

THE FITNESS SHOT. Q&A:

  • Most of the time, the fitness shot is just like a commercial shot, but you’re in athletic clothes. Casting directors are too busy to use their imaginations. Can’t blame them! Respect the hustle. So it’s up to us to make them believe in what we’re selling.

  • It’s actually not important at all to be doing action in your fitness shots. It’s more important to have the idea of fitness, athleticism, and to look health conscious. Basically a commercial shot in athletic clothing. But having actions shots can be useful in other ways. Remember, casting will visit your social pages, so getting action shots you can use Instagram content could be very helpful for your booking process!

  • Absolutely, once you have a professional commercial fitness shot, use your friends or aspiring photographers that you know to go out in the real world and take snaps of you working out for content for your page!

  • Leggings over shorts is my preference to shoot for this type of look because it is less distracting. Sometimes shorts depending on the length or shape, can cut you off or distort your lines. Plus, it’s less to worry about if you have any bruises on your legs or anything that would need touching up. Leggings sometimes just give off an easier everyday feel. But it’s always a personal preference. (Bring options!)

  • Preferably you’d rather have no labels showing. If it is a smaller label that’s much easier. Easier to edit out of the shot if you need and easier to not be distracting if you don’t edit it out. If you are in a huge Nike sports bra and that is being submitted for an adidas commercial it may be counterproductive.

BUT if you can’t help it, there are always ways in post to erase the label if need be. If it’s something more subtle like adidas’s 3 stripes, I think that just reads fitness and not adidas. Don’t over think it. But try to stay on the safe side and go with minimal labels for this one if you can!

  • I use a lot of fun colored backgrounds. Especially for fitness. So if you end up wearing all black we can always counterbalance that feeling too plain into a pop of color behind you. As long as you feel comfortable in what you are wearing we can get away with almost any color. Patterns are always welcomed for fitness wear. BUT KEEP IN MIND. Sometimes highlighter or fluorescent colors especially in athletic wear have white undertones with reflective material to keep you safe out on the streets. But under our lighting for photo shoots, these colors can backfire and completely blow themselves out. Stick with jeweled tones, primary colors, or deep rich colors that way the true tone will be brought out of the cute set you're wearing while shooting.

  • Nope! Again, it’s just like a commercial shot. So most likely it will be a three quarter shot. The good news is, no shoes necessary! No need to stress or buy new sneakers for a look that won’t show your feet!

  • It’s not a mandatory look but some agents ask clients to take a fitness shot. It is important but if you are on the fence of how many looks you are wanting to do, this is one that can be done on your next round of headshots. Remember, no one feels perfectly fitness ready. But there are always tips and tricks to make you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. You also want to remember that the fitness look needs to feel relatable to “main stream America” for casting purposes, so you may think your body isn’t exactly where you want it, but your perfect standards shouldn’t hold you back from taking a fitness shot. Because to somebody somewhere your body is perfect! There is a place for everyone in the fitness and health world!

  • You do not need props. But if you want to bring something small like a small towel, tiny weights, a rope, a roller, boxing hand gloves, or straps, feel free! Just keep it small and non distracting.

  • Mostly fluorescent or highlighter colors. Huge labels. Or Anything overly baggy. You want to keep it clean and easy! And when in doubt check out my sight for inspo and bring backups options for outfits!

  • You don’t have to worry about changing your hair drastically. You can absolutely wear it down. BUT if you are wanting one of your looks to have a hair change this is an easy one to make as your hair change look. A braid, high bun, pony, messy low pony etc. just keep in mind that this is usually one of your first looks so you don’t want to change it too drastically in which you can’t get it back to how you want it to look for the looks after the fitness shot.

  • It’s actually not important at all to be doing action in your fitness shots. It’s more important to have the idea of fitness, athleticism, and to look health conscious. • If you’re a dancer who isn’t “fitness trainer body” ready, and you have been asked for fitness shots by your agents, what are somethings that you can wear to help achieve that fitness look?

Body conscious athletic wear would be great for this shot. If you don’t love showing your stomach, think about what you might wear to the gym if you were to wear stuff that is form fitting but also covering. A tight fitting athleisure zip up can help make you feel more comfortable. A cropped (not to big) sweatshirt can work too! Try not to hide your body, but you don’t have to expose it either!
