FAQ - MAKE UP ARTISTS. WARDROBE STYLISTS. AND HAIR QUESTIONS.

MAKE-UP ARTIST QUESTIONS:

  • Absolutely! In the submission form you fill out to book your shoot you will be asked if you want to book one of my make up artists. If answered YES, I handle everything. If you want to request one of my resident make up artists you can as well, and that will also be something you can ask from me in your submission form.

From there Harper my assistant and I, take care of all of the bookings with the MUA for your shoot day and you sit back and give yourself a hand for doing the prep work.

I prefer booking everything, so everyone is on the same page and all the info for your shoot is processed through one place. That means (hopefully) nothing gets lost in translation, all direction is super clear, correct dates are put in calendars, and you know you are completely taken care of and don’t have to do all this work to set up your shoot day with all the back and forth. You have enough to plan out, make it easier on yourself and have me do it!

  • If you booked your shoot through my submission form and marked YES for a makeup artist then everything is taken care of for you through me and you do not need to reach out and confirm with them. Or ask them about dates. I handled that part of the shoot for you.

If you marked NO on your submission form because you wanted to book a makeup artist on your own. Then you are in charge of all the scheduling with the makeup artist you are hiring separately.

Always feel free to ask specifics, and always feel free to double check with me. But once your deposit is down and Harper my assistant has sent you your confirmation email regarding your shoot date, you can scroll down to the section about your make up artist to see that they are confirmed for your shoot!

  • No! It’s not something that you need to do. You can if you want to. But it’s not expected on your end. During the first part of your shoot day you will have time to discuss the makeup looks with the MUA and together we come up with a game for that day!

  • YES! My make up artists provide eyelashes. No extra cost. If you have a specific type that you like wearing, feel free to bring those. Otherwise you are more than welcome to use the makeup artist’s set on them!

  • You don’t need to plan with the makeup artist in advance unless you have a request that is super specific. But for the most part, you can show up and know that you guys will have some time together to discuss. There shouldn’t be anything too too wacky that you are requesting because most of these shoots are for headshots and it’s better to keep your make up on the safe side or classic side for the longevity of your looks.

  • This is tough to answer in a general sense, but I’ll do my best!

The make up artists charge by timing and not by looks.

If you want the makeup artist to only do 2 looks out of the 4 you are shooting, It has to be 2 looks in a row. So let’s say you want look 1, commercial, and look 2, personal style. And then from there we continue to do look 3 and 4 without the makeup artist and we can let them go home, that’s totally fine. You’ll be charged by the make up artist for 2 looks only.

But if you want them to do your first look, commercial and your fourth look, grown/tour, you’ll still be paying the same rate as 4 looks since they are spending their time waiting around for you to shoot the other two looks that are in between looks 1 and 4.

So we made a rule that the looks that you are getting done by the MUA must be back to back. Does that make sense? We base our rates for the makeup artist on timing.

If that doesn’t make too much sense let’s lay out these examples for a more visual explanation:

1st look: Commercial (1st make up change)

2nd look: Girl next door (no make up change)

3rd look: Edgy (2nd make up change)

    -make up artist leaves-

4th look: Grown (no make up change)

This equals a charge of 3 looks for the make up artist because they’ll be there for 3 looks.

Here is a way that your 2 makeup looks with a 4 looks shoot could work:

1st look: commercial (1st make up)

2nd look: girl next door (2nd make up change)

    -make up artist leaves-

3rd look: edgy (no make up change) 4th look: grown (no make up change)

(I just made up the categories of shooting, but you see where we’re going, right?)

    Does this make sense?

We want to respect the makeup artist’s time. And if they are with you all of your shoot sitting around making less money than they could that day because they turned down other work, it seems anything but respectful.

Again, always feel free to ask me specifics, but this is the general idea!

  • Have you ever gone to get your color done from your amazingly skilled hair stylist and before you leave you say… “oh, can you just quickly glam my face to perfection?” No. We don’t always assume that since you are a hair stylist that you are also and incredibly gifted make up artist. Usually you’d hire a hair person for hair and a make up artist for makeup. People assume that all make up artists are masters at hair as well. This isn't always the case.

However, my makeup artists do have very basic hair skills and they do offer those services (or hair help) for a fee of $25 per hair help change.

The point of the dramatic scenario above, is to give you some perspective on what your make up artist can be capable if hair wise.

They can help with basic changes:

    • Straightening

    • Curling

    • Fly always

    • A simple braid

    • Etc.

    Basic stuff!

If you have crazy long hair or you want a full blow out, maybe look into having a professional style it before the shoot. Dry Bar is always a good option. Or a place like a Dry Bar could work for you.

We don’t want your expectations to be too grand when it comes to the MUA's hair game. They are AMAZING makeup artists. That help with very basic hair needs if need be.

Always feel free to let me know your game plan with your hair prior to your shoot in case you feel better discussing it beforehand.

  • I get this question every so often. And it’s a hard one for me to answer.

If you have really curly hair and you think you need to shoot your looks with both curly and straight there are ways to accommodate this.

First you should specifically ask your agents what they want or expect from you with your hair for your looks. Then base your shoot on that.

Keep in mind. If you book 4 looks that will need to be split up into two days, you are actually going to be paying for 2 looks on one day and 2 looks on another day. Breaking up your 4 look package on two different days isn’t something we can accommodate price wise. booking 2 shoots means you'll be booking 2 shoots. Booking 4 looks means you are booking 1 shoot day. The expectation on my end is that you would be paying for two shoot days if your shoot can not be done on one day.

If you hair doesn’t need to be washed in order for you to achieve this goal then a one day shoot may be accommodated for you. Straight to curly or curly to straight. Usually you will make this change yourself unless you hire someone to come to the studio to do this for you during your shoot date. But to me, this is just a hair change and can totally work with our shoot date.

I feel so redundant saying this, but if you have any concerns please let me know ahead of time so we can chat about your hair needs!

  • If you’re hired a makeup artist through me, you don’t need to bring any make up with you.

But if you want to just in case, or if you have something really specific that you like to use or want the MUA to use then feel free to bring whatever you'd like!

If you have any allergies when it comes to things you put on your face, this would be a great reason to bring your own makeup. Please discuss with your MUA if you have any allergies. If the allergies are severe, I can connect you ahead of time with your make up artist to make sure we are safe. If it is a slight allergy, and you have had make up artists in th epast that have worked with you, chances are your MUA knows how to handle this. You might as well say something sooner than later because... Better safe than sorry!

If you are bringing your own make up Artist, I would double check them and how they operate.

  • Here are some of my regular make up artists:

I have more that I love, these are just a few I use regularly.

  • Jade, Lizzy, Kellie and Larke’s rates are located at the bottom of my Rates & Packages Page on my site.

(scroll to the bottom of the page in the link above to see this info.)

Christina Barras’s rates are a tiny bit different. She is a regular of mine as well, but people tend to hire her on their own. Her rates are different than my make up artists listed above which is why people tend to book her separately.

You can always request which make up artist you want when you are booking through my submissions page. Even if it’s Christina, I can reach out to her, but remember her rates are different then Larke and Jade’s rates listed on my site.

All three of these women are incredible!

  • I have a few make up artists in my Rolodex that are very skilled in different skin tones, face shapes, eye shapes, etc. I would love for you to scroll through my website to see photos of past clients that you may find similar to your features. Almost every shot on my site has a make up artist that professionally worked on those clients. Sometime clients will take screenshots of the people they relate to on my site and request the makeup artist that worked on that photo and I’ll book that MUA. BUT I’m very confident in my MUA’s that specialize in POC and I trust them completely. The feedback has been extremely positive.

As always, please be honest with me in the booking process and I can always give you those make up artist’s instagram pages so you can find the right fit for you and I will book that artist for you, no problem!

I’m here to help and I understand that not everything is a one size fits all kinda life. Together we can find the best match for you:)

  • I absolutely do recommend make up artists for the guys. You want to think about color correction for skin. Scars, dark spots, red undertones, yellow undertones etc. it’s extremely beneficial to get a make up artist for those reason. The lighting I use can bring out things you don’t see everyday.

To me, if you’d spend a little more money upfront on a MUA, then you’ll most like save money in post work because you probably won’t need to buy extra edits since you’re already looking pretty damn flawless and ready to go with the original photos.

  • No! Guys get a nice deal of $200 for the shoot day. If you want more than just basic grooming and you’re someone looking for a Smokey eye and lashes and the full bump up every look, then the prices will be the same as listed on site for the make up artist. Just let me know in advance what you are thinking so we can make sure everyone is on the same page!

  • You and your make up artist can arrive together. No need to come ready for your first look. Your first look is built in to your time for your shoot. Your make up artist can even arrive 15-20 minutes later than you because the two of us have a little meeting before we even get started talking about the make up game plan.

I have a whole make up room with beautiful lighting and director chairs. Your make up artist just needs to bring their kit and any hair stuff that they may need in case they are doing your hair touch ups as well!

I'd love to know their name ahead of time, so that's that only thing I need from you!

  • I highly suggest getting a make up artist. I know it may seem unnecessary when you think about it, or daunting because not all MUA are great or get the headshot make up look, but let me assure you, mine are worth the extra money. In my personal opinion, spending a little more now, gives you that clean polished look and really gives you the difference between your looks. (Not to mention that perfect commercial look that is just so clean and fresh). Plus It adds a certain longevity to your photos. My MUAs are amazing. I work with all former dancers and they get this industry we’re in. It is TOTALLY your choice and I don’t want you to feel any pressure from my side, just a reassurance that if you decide to pull the trigger and get one, that you’ll be happy! Again, your choice and no pressure: )

  • You can arrive close to ready. But you don't have to be perfect. After we have our meeting I'll need to set up the studio for our first look. During that time you can touch up and fix anything you need and get yourself cute before we get started on your first look. From there you will have a good amount of time in between the other looks to bump your make up or change your hair.

No rush on my end... within reason ;)

  • This is such a personal call for you. If you feel super confident in your work then you can make this call.

I like to remind clients that shoot days are hard. They are stressful, long, and a lot to plan for. Would you rather have someone just take care of the hard part for you? Getting pampered with a makeup artist just may make the day easier. But at the same time, if you feel like a happy day is one where you are in more control and you know how you want everything to be, then you are more than welcome to do it yourself!

Just weigh your options before and make a decision that feels right for you.

Have you ever done make up for a shoot with the type of lighting I use? Do you feel confident in the “no make up” makeup look? Or are you only great a full glammed face?

These are the type of questions you want to ask yourself and you can decide accordingly!

  • This is a tough one for me to answer. Half of the time I’m so pleased with the make up artists that my clients being in. I get to work with new talent and sometimes those makeup artist’s and I get to work together again.

But sometimes this backfires. And I have also seen this go very south.

Make sure you trust this person. And by that I mean trust their skills with your investment and with your headshots that will be booking you work. Make sure this person has done shoots before that aren’t iPhone based. More of a studio vibe type of shoot. With studio lighting. Also have they done headshots before? Do they understand what that means? Even if they are a makeup artist in the fashion world, sometimes that doesn’t transfer exactly the way you think for headshots. Do you feel comfortable telling them you don’t like their work and you want them to change something? Or are you a people pleaser who doesn’t want to hurt your friends feelings?

Remember, they may not be charging you for their work, but you are paying for your shoot. So it technically isn’t free. And if you don’t like the outcome, that’s a lot of money you just blew for your friend.

So think about this one before you decide! Because it is a 50/50 chance that this will go one way or the other:)
